The Legion of Mary is an association of Catholics who, with the sanction of the Church and under the powerful leadership of Mary Immaculate, have formed themselves into a bond of service for our Church. They are men and women of all ages, single and married, devoted to the Blessed Mother and seeking to unite themselves with her in caring for others. They visit the sick and lonely in nursing homes and hospitals. Their work is enriched by deep prayer, regular spiritual reading and lively discussions held at each meeting.
The Legion of Mary was founded in Dublin in 1921 by Frank Duff. It is an association of lay Catholics wishing to share in Church’s mission of spreading the Good News of God’s Kingdom, through prayer and service of the Community. Members of the Legion of Mary have as their Queen and Model the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Apostles Mother of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and Mother of the Church. The Legion of Mary has spread to the five continents of the World. The basis unit of the Legion of Mary is called a Praesidium and Members meet each week (for about an hour) to pray, organise and report on work undertaken. Membership is open to all practising Catholics. Three Praesidia operate in the Parishes of St Peter’s and St Paul’s. A Ladies Praesidium called “Mary Mother of the Church” meets every Monday morning after Mass in the Lower Sacristy in St Paul’s Church. Their work consists of visiting the sick and housebound in their home, Lurgan Hospital, Nursing Homes and other institutions. They perform small works of service where they can. The Rosary is recited morning and evening in St Paul’s Church and a large number of Sacred Heart Messengers are distributed each month. Another ladies Praesidum called “Our Lady of Victories” based in St Peter’s meets at the Legion of Mary bookstall each Monday morning. Home visitations and distribution of Sacred Heart Messengers forms the basis of their work. They also carry out small works of service. A man’s Praesidium called “Our Lady of the Snows” meets on Thursday evening in St Peter’s Legion of Mary bookstall. The work of this Praesidium consists of home visitations, spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart and Miraculous Medal. Members are also responsible for the Bookstalls in both Parishes and for the Catholic Literature stands in both churches. Members have also visited hospitals and have done convert instruction. Another degree of no-action membership is called "Auxiliary Membership". These members do not attend a weekly meeting or undertake any work. Their very valuable contribution consists in praying the Rosary and Legion Prayers daily for the Church. A large number of auxiliaries have been enrolled. The Legion of Mary would welcome new members to help develop its work in our Parish.
