Policy on Parish Cemetery PDF Print E-mail

Cemetery Plots in St. Colman's Cemetery are available:
  1. 1. Single plots (10 ft long by 3¾ feet wide) £150
  2. 2. Double plots (10 ft long by 7½ feet wide) £300

The Scheme to concrete the new paths and repair the old ones in St. Colman's Cemetery is completed and plans will be drawn up to renew the frontage and provide other facilities as soon as practical.

The cost of these improvements and the ongoing maintenance of the cemetrey are considerable and are generally paid for from parish funds. Another source of income is the charge for graves. As it now many years since these have benn reviewed it has been decided that the charges for new plots for burials on or after the 1st January 2007 will be as follows:

Single plot £150
Double plot £300

As a single plot suffices for at least two burials it is suggested that single plots, rather than double plots, be the norm. Very many of the existing double plots in St. Colman's have two burials only, resulting in St. Colman's expanding rapidly. It would be more efficient use of limited ground if, unless it was considered necessary, a single plot only be aquired.

Cemetery Guidelines

  1. There is no pre-booking of plots in the parish cemetery.
  2. Plots are sold in sequence, (a family receives the next plot in line)
  3. Plots are only sold to people living in the parish.
  4. Double plots are 10 feet long and must be between 7¼ and 7½ feet wide in total. i.e. the outer limit for grave side kerbs must not exceed 7½ feet. In the case of single plots the grave side kerbs must not be more than 3¾ feet in width.
  5. Those erecting cemetery monuments must take good care not to damage any other plots in the cemetery. They should also ensure that they remove pieces of stone or cement etc from the cemetery when completing their work.
  6. All monumental workers should contact the Parish Office before commencement of work.
  7. Any monument erected or any work carried out on a monument may only be done by people who have produced proof of insurance.
  8. In order to respect the sacred character of the cemetery, relatives and visitors are asked to assist especially in the following ways:
    • Please ensure that all paths are kept clear at all times.
    • Un-used ground adjacent to plots (eg. at end of row) is also kept clear.
    • Please put cemetry waste into the skip until other arrangements are made (it is hoped that the skip will be replaced by large bins in the future).

It is intended that these charges and guidelines will be reviewed periodically.
